Saying goodbye to interstates, we headed toward Amarillo for a visit to Palo Duro Canyon – second largest Canyon in the US. We took a side trip to Caprock Canyon State Park without realizing it was the southern end of the Palo Canyon. They have a large herd of bison (incorrectly called buffalo, we learned), so we got some close up views (from the RV). Plus, a prairie dog town!

Bison (not buffalo, we were informed!)
Just one of many prairie dogs!

On our way to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, we took a side road which led us into and through the canyon itself.  Bud started getting sleepy so Shari started driving, and about 2 miles later realized that the road into the canyon was at a 10% grade.  Bud enjoyed the scenery while Shari prayed with her eyes wide open!

  1. Great photos! BTW, at the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, ND, they are more generous with the naming conventions. While scientifically they are bison, the ND Museum encourages including the common use of “Buffalo” for the north American animals.

    1. Good to know! the park museum itself had some conflicting titles on various displays – some calling them buffalo, some using the name bison.
